Is Everest Locksmith Licensed in BC? Yes — Here’s the Proof.

Yes. Everest Locksmith holds a security worker licence issued under British Columbia’s Security Services Act, number #B7554. Locksmiths in BC are licensed as security industry professionals by the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, and the province publishes a free tool that lets you confirm any licence in about a minute.

What “licensed” actually means here

In British Columbia locksmithing is not a self-declared trade. It is a regulated security occupation, and working as one without a licence is an offence. To hold a security worker licence with a locksmith category, a person must:

• Hold a Locksmith Certificate of Qualification, or complete an approved course plus documented supervised experience under a licensed locksmith.
• Be at least 19 years old.
• Submit fingerprints and pass a criminal record check.
• Work for, or operate as, a licensed security business.

That is a meaningfully higher bar than most trades that come to your house. It exists because of what the job is: a licensed locksmith is someone the province has vetted to open other people’s doors.

What the law obliges a locksmith to do

The Act does not stop at the licence. It sets conduct obligations too, and Consumer Protection BC spells them out plainly:

• Carry the licence at all times. Not at the office, not in the van — on the person doing the work.
• Show it to anyone who asks. You are entitled to see it before work starts, and you do not need a reason.
• Carry no badge. Licensed locksmiths in BC are not permitted a badge. Anyone flashing one is telling you something.
• Act with honesty and integrity, without discrimination and without abusive or insulting language.

All three matter for different reasons, and having one is not evidence of the others. A locksmith can be licensed and uninsured. Ask for all three.

Why this matters more for locksmiths than for most trades

Almost every other trade you let into your home is there to work on something. A locksmith is there because you cannot get in, which means you are least able to check anybody at the exact moment you most need to. That asymmetry is the whole reason the licence, the fingerprinting and the criminal record check exist.

It is also why the sector attracts the operators it does. Fraudulent and unlicensed locksmiths have appeared on the BBB and BC Crime Prevention list of top scams affecting Vancouver, and the pattern is consistent enough to describe in a sentence: a local-looking phone number routed to an out-of-town call centre, a quote of $19 to $39, a technician who reaches for a drill on a lock that could be picked, and a final bill several hundred dollars higher than the number you agreed.

What you are entitled to ask for, before anyone starts

1. The registered business name and address. Not a trading name and a service area — the actual registered name.
2. The BC security worker licence number. Ours is published on every page of this site rather than produced on request.
3. Where the technician is based. If the answer is vague, you are probably talking to a call centre selling your address on.
4. The total price, including the call-out and parts. One number, before dispatch, not a starting rate.
5. Whether the lock will be picked or drilled, and what a replacement costs if drilling turns out to be necessary.
6. Whether they take cards. Cash-only is a flag; every legitimate operator takes a card.

Conduct or licensing issues under the Security Services Act go to the Registrar of Security Services at the Security Programs Division.
